How I'm Different
In psychotherapy, people generally look backwards. But that often leads to the undesirable result of reenforcing old patterns and trauma. In my method, rather than concentrating exclusively on the past, we'll see how those issues are landing in the present and affecting you now. It's a slight shift in focus but it changes everything in the outcome of the treatment.
How I Got There
I once had a friend who was in psychotherapy twice a week for years and years. She asked me to attend a session because her therapist wanted to meet one of her friends, and I did. In that hour, I could see from the questions I was asked and the judgmental things the therapist said that the therapy was a waste of my friend’s time (and money). Indeed, over the years, her issues and relationships got worse, not better.
So, is the point that traditional psychotherapy can sometimes be less than helpful? Yes, but one more story. In my twenties, I needed to see someone and was first referred to a therapist who hardly spoke at all. He didn't help very much. But then to another who was present, focused on how the past played into the "here and now," listened and truly changed my life. When I went into the field, I resolved that I would be that kind of therapist.
Our Sessions
The sessions are 45 minutes, and we'll talk about your past and current experience. We'll move at your pace while keeping an eye on the big picture.
The areas I treat include anxiety, depression, relationships, childhood trauma, OCD, PTSD, parents and parenting, grieving, spiritual and career. The demographic: adults and teens, individuals and couples in my office at 16 Madison Square West (aka 1115 Broadway) @ 25th Street, and by teletherapy.
Suffices to say, if you are not living your ideal life, if you're plagued by trauma, loss, or unhelpful patterns of thought or behavior, I think you'll find that our work together can truly make a difference.
My Bio
I am a Licensed Psychotherapist, educated at New York University, Georgetown University and the University of Maryland. I've been in practice for fifteen years. My approach is based on psychodynamic psychotherapy but I draw on a range of modalities depending on your individual need, including cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Early in my career, I was a commercial banker, which gave me an understanding of the business world. I'm an author as well, which includes two self-mentoring books on career, parents and relationships.
